By setting new science-based targets (SBTs), Kiilto can future-proof business growth and positive impact while mitigating climate change.

“Science-based targets are becoming more and more relevant for our company and our customers. Putting science first leads our work in updating our existing targets and making new ones. We can now address climate change more precisely and transparently when using the SBT framework, which is publicly recognized and scientifically standardized. This make it easier for us to understand how ambitious certain targets are for our company and how we can support our customers in their sustainability work even better,” says Kiilto’s Environmental Engineer Viivi Kettula.

Strengthening the Promise to the Environment

Purposeful work for environment has been lead with Kiilto's Promise to the Environment since 2018. Especially the efforts in the green materials, green packages and green energy have contributed to combatting the climate change.

Instead of being replaced, Kiilto's Promise to the Environment targets will be reassessed to better reinforce the SBTs. This starts with evaluating the latest environmental progress. According to Kettula, the environmental achievements should be moving targets that encourage learning on the go.

“We already exceeded our Green Services goal of helping our customers reduce their use of materials for 2023. Our water consumption savings played a huge role in this number and we are considering setting separate targets for water-based savings and material-based savings in the future,” says Kettula.

In addition to setting the SBTs, Kiilto has also joined the Net Zero target. Where Carbon neutrality means striking a balance – between emitting carbon and absorbing carbon from the atmosphere – Net Zero is more ambitious and aggressive in not just reducing carbon dioxide, but also eliminating all other greenhouse gases. Current scientific consensus holds that net zero must be achieved at a global level to stop human-caused global warming. Furthermore, net zero includes indirect emissions from our entire value chain. The SBTs help enable the transition to the low-carbon economy by halving GHG emissions by 2030 and dropping to net-zero by 2050.

Joining a global effort

Kiilto is not alone in this global effort. 2,000 other businesses around the world have joined the SBT initiative. Once committed, companies have 24 months to submit their targets for validation by the SBT initiative.

The SBTi is a partnership between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

Read more about Science Based Targets and find the companies taking corporate climate action here.

The desire to be an environmental leader means reducing harmful greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions related to company operations clearly and…

[4,273
12,275,276,277,955
