Materials

Application

Special cement-based, fast setting and drying floor screed for castings, fillings and slopes at thicknesses 5-100 mm in interior areas. Suitable for interior and exterior use. Carefully floated surface is suitable for waterproofing. For finishing the floor prior to floor covering we recommend Kiilto levelling compounds, if needed. The concrete substrate must comply with national standards. (In Finland SisäRYL 2013 and BY 45).

1. Bonded floor/firm concrete subfloor or building board: The substrate must be clean, solid and firm. Remove cement laitance, paint splashes, adhesive residue and other impurities and brush or vacuum the floor thoroughly.
Concrete subfloors are pre-treated with diluted Kiilto Start Primer (10–20% primer/80–90% water) prior to application of the floor screed. With building board subfloors, use Kiilto Start Primer undiluted.
In outdoor applications and with non-absorbent substrates prime the substrate with Kiilto Fix Primer or make a bond bridge with, e.g. Kiilto Saneerauslaasti cementitious adhesive with a notched trowel. In ground supported structures, the capillary rise of moisture must be prevented.
With a bonded cast floor we recommend using the maximum amount of water (2.8 L/20 kg) in order to get proper adhesion between the screed layer and the subfloor.
Underfloor heating can be installed directly on a primed (Kiilto Start Primer), coarse, firm concrete or gypsum board surface. Heating pipes/cables are fixed on the subfloor with, e.g., hot-melt adhesive or with suitable installation clips. If using a fibreglass underfloor heating mat, e.g., in renovation, use more flowable Kiilto Lattialämmitystasoite levelling screed for floor heating.

2. Floating construction/weak concrete subfloor:
The cast is separated from the subfloor, for example, with Kiilto Valusuojakangas separation fabric or construction paper. The cast is detached from walls and inlets with separating boards/elastic sealant. The thickness of the cast shall be at least 50 mm reinforced construction (e.g., # 150 Ø 5). In underfloor heating floors, the heating cables/pipes are fixed in the concrete reinforcement.

Instructions for use

Strew Kiilto 70 powder slowly in cool (+10–20 °C), clean water with a power mixer until a smooth mass is formed. Let the mix mature for approx. 2 min., remix once and start spreading. The mixing can be done also with a concrete mixer (mixing time approx. 3–5 minutes). Apply Kiilto 70 evenly by using a darby float and/or a wide steel trowel. The surface can be rubbed almost immediately after spreading. The cast must be dry before finishing with a floor levelling compound. The drying of the screed must not be accelerated by heat or ventilation, since too quick a drying may cause hair cracks. If the temperature in the levelled room is higher than normal, the relative humidity very low, or if the levelled floor surface is exposed to direct sunlight, we recommend covering the floor with a tarpaulin as soon as it is dry enough to allow walking. The floor should be covered with a flooring relatively soon after it has hardened and dried. This will prevent the surface from over drying, cracking and creating a weak bond. If the floor is not going to be covered with a flooring within 14 days of levelling, the levelled floor must be treated with Kiilto after-curing agent or covered with plastic on the day following the levelling having been carried out, at the latest.

Waterproofing membrane/floor covering can be installed 1–3 days after spreading the screed, if the screed layer is less than 50 mm. If the layer is 100 mm, it can be covered after 5 days in optimal drying conditions (20 °C, 50% RH). The screed will rapidly acquire good surface strength and will chemically absorb the amount of water stated in the instructions. Substrate's high moisture content and poor drying conditions will retard the curing process. With regard to floor covering installation and substrate's moisture specification, follow instructions given by RYL and the floor covering manufacturer. When assessing substrate's coatability, take the entire structure into consideration.

On larger surfaces the need for movement joints shall be considered. Not recommended for floors that are going to be painted. Not recommended for applications where the parquet will be glued down onto the subfloor. In areas where waterproofing is used, e.g., bathroom floors, the cast should be applied under the waterproofing membrane. Not suitable for areas permanently under water (e.g., swimming pools). Note! Using more water than instructed will retard the drying process and weaken the strength of the concrete. It may also cause separation and cracking.
