Kiilto Oy received an honourable mention in the Environmental Responsibility category at the European Responsible Care Award 2019 competition, which was arranged by the European Chemical Industry Council, Cefic.
Kiilto’s entry was an advanced heat recovery system that utilises a variety of energy sources to heat the factory and water.
“We are delighted with the recognition we have received. In the spring of 2018, we launched an initiative called Our Promise to the Environment, in which environmentally friendly energy solutions are one essential area. The heat recovery system supplied by Calefa Oy, which we launched in 2018, utilises waste heat and geothermal heat and cold energy. As a result, we have reduced our plant’s annual energy consumption by 14% and the CO2 emissions by 310 tonnes. In addition, we have gained increased production capacity and uniformity, and managed to make our production schedules regular. This autumn we have phased in a similar system for our hot melt adhesive production. Our goal is to be carbon-neutral by 2028″, says Kiilto Oy’s Deputy Managing Director Mikko Viljanmaa.
Kiilto’s project was considered unique and innovative by the competition jury. There were 16 competitors in the Environmental Responsibility category in all, and Kemira Oyj was chosen as the winner.
Cefic awarded the prizes to the winners in the Responsible Care Award 2019 ceremony in Helsinki on Thursday 24 October.
